Frequently Asked Questions

When & where will the walk be held?

The walk starts at 4.30am at the Tourist Information Centre on the harbour-side in St Peter Port. GY1 2LQ

Getting to the start

Q – What if my car needs to be at North Beach Car Park for more than 10 hours?

A- Firstly, even though you will be arriving in the early hours, you MUST use a 10 hour bay. Your walker pack will contain a voucher that should be left on your dashboard clearly visible alongside the conventional parking clock. This will be respected by the parking wardens if you overstay your allotted time.

How is my time recorded?

Please bear in mind that this event is not a time trial, but is an endurance challenge. Accordingly, walker times will not be published.

That said, we do understand that you may have a ‘personal best’ or expectation against which you want to compare your time on the day. Your time will be recorded by our scanners and can be provided to you by checkpoint staff – but please be considerate if at the time they are momentarily engaged in marshalling other walkers.

Please be aware that those starting at Leg 1 will be allocated a start time of 4.30am. If you wish to note a more accurate time of your start, do take note of the countdown clock clearly visible as you cross the start line.

Elite sportsmen and women are encouraged to monitor their performance using their own phone-based or GPS logging software which is widely available.

Can I bring my dog with me?

Although we do not ban dogs we wouldn’t encourage them to attempt the entire route – 39 miles is a bit too long a distance for your average pooch. Should your dog require any assistance whatsoever while on the walk it is entirely your responsibility to find the necessary help.

Will there be water stations round the course & where?

There are water stations at each checkpoint where you can refill your water bottle.
Some checkpoints also have food distribution (cereal bars etc.) and there is a hot breakfast supplied at Le Gouffre.

Will there be medical assistance?

Yes - for urgent or serious injury call 999 or 112 immediately.
For non-critical assistance, St John paramedics will be on station and may be summoned by any checkpoint staff or by calling Walk Control on 07781 114 999.

Will there be massage therapists available?

Yes. Massage therapists will be available at Pleinmont and Cobo.

Where will my sponsorship go?

A – All the costs of staging the Saffery Rotary Walk are met by the generosity of our Corporate Sponsors. We therefore proudly boast that every penny raised by you, our walkers, is donated to carefully selected charities who serve the Bailiwick and which are validated and published prior to each event.

Planning a relay team?

Q - Does our first walker have to start at 4.30am at the Tourist Information Office?
A – Yes, as the checkpoints for this and other legs are open for designated periods only.

Q – Can other team members start at any time or do they have to wait for the incoming walker?
A – Yes, the next walker can set off at a time to suit themselves, as long as the checkpoint at the beginning and end of the leg is open (see walk booklet or website for times). They MUST sign in BOTH before they start walking and when they finish their final leg.

Q – Can a team member walk more than their one section?
A – Yes, as many as they like but, again, they must check in at the checkpoint at the start of EVERY leg walked and sign out at any checkpoint when they leave the walk.

Q – Does at least one member of the team have to walk every leg?
A – Ideally yes. We want you to enjoy the satisfaction of ‘conquering’ the challenge of collectively circumnavigating our wonderful island. But at the end of the day it is more important for your team to achieve a challenge relevant to your collective fitness. Certainly, each team member should walk at least one leg in full to fulfil the spirit of the challenge.

Q- Can more than one team member walk the same leg?
A – Yes. Having a companion walker is enjoyable. BUT, save in the final yards (see below)  we do not encourage large numbers walking together in a single group. The path is often narrow and to do so may act to frustrate or be unsafe to other walkers walking at a different pace than you.

Q – Can we all walk through the finish together?
A – Yes, many teams meet up at the Salerie carpark and then walk the final 300m to cross the finish line together. But please all wear your orange shirts as before so we recognise you all as official walkers. It’s also better for the pic’s!

Q – Do we have to be at the finish to get a medal?
A – No, your last team member can pick up medals on behalf of the whole team.

Do I have a walk number?

Yes. You will receive a walker pack containing your walk number.
Each walker pack also contains luggage tag, a t-shirt, information booklet and some other useful bits and pieces for the day. Our major dispatch date having now passed, your walker pack, including our amazing Walk Shirt and numbered Walk id tags, will be posted out to you in the first week of June.

Our principal mailing date will be in late April. With subsequent ad hoc despatches for later registrants.

What do I do if I have to drop out?

If you decide to drop out from the walk you should try to retire at a checkpoint. The checkpoint officials will make sure that your retirement is recorded.
If you have to retire between checkpoints then you should contact Walk Control on the number given in your Information Pack.

Are there toilets on the course?

Yes. There are toilet facilities at all Checkpoints plus at many other spots along the route.

What do I do with my bag?

We will transport bags for you between checkpoints.
On arrival at a checkpoint you will find your bag at the ‘Bag In’ area.
When leaving a checkpoint you must ensure that your bag is moved to the ‘Bag Out’ area so that it is moved onward to the next checkpoint.
You must make sure that the luggage label provided is secured to your bag.

Can I donate sponsorship even though I may not walking?

Of course. Your help would be very warmly received. Please use the DONATE button at the head of the screen. Or any of our Checkpoints on the day will be pleased to accept donations from well-wishers.

How do I pay over my sponsorship money?

Why not collect sponsorship immediately using the Race Nation giving pages. Use your log in and follow the prompts.
If you are raising money in the traditional method bring your sponsorship money to the start in cash or cheque, made payable to ‘The Rotary Walk’. Alternatively, you can send the cheque to the Saffery Trust. La Tonnelle House, Les Banques, St. Sampson, Guernsey, GY1 3HS.
